On 10 June 2017, the IPK Gatersleben welcomes visitors to take a look behind the scenes of the institute.
Everybody is invited to be a plant scientist for a day!
There are lots of places to explore, such as the impressive crop seed bank, a perennial garden, state-of-the-art laboratories, greenhouses and botanical reference collections. A plethora of activities is waiting for you: Isolate your own DNA, learn more about the history of your food, discover the endless applications of biotechnology or test your knowledge in a plant quiz. But it doesn’t stop there! The diverse programme offers activities for visitors of all ages to get involved via numerous exhibitions, interactive guided tours, presentations, hands on science and information desks.
On the Open Day 2017, G2P-SOL partner PD Dr. Andreas Börner will guide visitors through the institute’s world-famous ex situ gene bank that preserves enormous biological diversity. At IPK Gatersleben, Dr. Börner is heading the research group “Resources Genetics and Reproduction”. Further to this position, he was recently elected as President Designate of the European Association for Research on Plant Breeding (EUCARPIA). EUCARPIA aims to promote scientific and technical co-operation in plant breeding to foster its further development on European level. As President Designate, Dr. Börner will represent EUCARPIA at conferences and will become its President in 2020.
